As you might have seen over the past few days, I tried something new with my wedding posts. Now – I need your input so that I can continue to make Life Writing Photography a site that holds your interest. So, if you have a quick second, please take this poll!

and, since I have only not included a photo on one post in the past two years (and vowed I would not do that again) here is a pretty spring picture for you:

The above photos are pictures that I took on a hike during our last day in West Virginia.  It was extra fun because one of our best friends, Trey, came over from DC to visit that afternoon.  Trey is one of those kinds of friends with whom you can pick up right where you left off , even if you haven’t seen him or spoken with him in awhile.  And he is also a great balance between deep conversations and complete silliness, which we definitely had both of during our time with Trey.  We obviously did not take photos of our “deep conversations”  but I am happy to share some of the silliness with you in this last “traces of Christmas” post.

First of all, in the meadow we could build a snowman (sorry I had to because every time I look at this photo, that line goes through my head), and build one we did.  It was my first one ever!!  And I think it came out pretty cool.

Then Trey and Kenzo decided to have a duel:

and after an awesome ninja leap by Trey, they turned on me:

Trey’s battle wounds:

Our snowman at the end of our hike:

After the hike, as we headed back to the house to hit up the hot tub, we decided to stop by a cool, iron bridge and ended up “testing Cheat Lake” as we termed it.

Testing Cheat Lake meant picking out a large rock to throw from the middle of the bridge on to the frozen lake to see if it cracked.  (Above Trey is getting the perfect rock and below he’s tossing it over).

Cheat Lake passed without a crack.  So Trey turned to something that might crack easier . . .

. . . a piece of ice.

Trey, from hours in the hot tub to Settlers of Catan until 2am, we really enjoyed your visit.  THANKS for coming!  (PS…I got Settlers for my birthday!!)

The end.

Do you see what I see in the photo above?

Mia.

She blends in pretty well with the coloring of the snow and the leaves.

A couple days before Christmas, we (Mary and Kaz – my parents in law and Kenzo – the hubs) went hiking at Cooper’s Rock in WV while it was snowing.  I was in heaven!  Or at least imagined myself to be “walking in a winter wonderland.”  It was so pretty and so calm and I walked SO slowly to take photo after photo of the beauty.

Oh yeah, and of course, I attacked Kenzo with some snowballs . . . which Kaz captured below!

and I got him to agree to make snow angels with me . . . which he was better at, but I am blaming that on FL.

I thought that this post was appropriate tonight, as I sit in the one state in the country that did not get snow today.  I know that it can be a pain, but I hope that most of you (who do not live in Florida) are able to enjoy its beauty today too.

Call me a Floridian or an idiot or whatever you will . . . but until December 2009, I did not know that “snowflakes” were actually flakes.  I had no idea that to the human eye, they really looked like the hand made snow flakes we made in elementary school by folding a piece of paper and making various cuts out of it.  During the six years that I lived in NC, I might have seen snow six times and the snow there seemed like little tiny balls, so I thought if you put that under a microscope, then you would see the individualized pattern of each one that I had heard talked about before.

You can imagine then, my delight and surprise when I first witnessed these pretty little things.  We were skiing in WV last December (2009) and flakes began to gather on my jacket – and I was amazed.  I was like a little kid, getting to meet Santa Claus.  I could not stop looking at them, playing with them and awing at their beauty and delicacy.  I think that Kenzo was laughing inside at my awe, but he certainly played along with me, pointing out big ones, small ones, ones that looked like ninja stars, etc.

As we headed up to West Virginia again in 2010, armed with my macro lens, I told Kenzo I could not WAIT to snap pictures of individual flakes.  SO . . . at the first snowfall, I bundled up and spent an hour outside, playing.  Here are some of my favorites.

PS . . . since I always have my camera on me and take more photos than I probably should . . . I thought I would share some of my favorites on here from our holiday.  SO . . . be prepared for four more days of “traces of Christmas” 2010.
